Top 10 techniques to make your UI images pop
After appreciating hundreds of high-quality projects on Behance and a couple of dribble shots, I sum up a set of techniques that you can apply to your own UI design that can make your work look professional immediately.
This article was inspired by early frustration at the inception of my UI Design career. I did the same thing as many other designers: browsing through other people’s works on Behance and Dribbble, then trying to get inspiration for my work.
I vividly remember getting lost and overwhelmed by the ocean of projects online initially. It was like looking through the kaleidoscope, you would see fancy patterns, but it had gone immediately when you took off the kaleidoscope. The feeling of happiness was short-lived. When I took out my design work again, I still had no idea what to do. And then i realised with time that I purposelessly appreciated other designers’ work without thinking and learning from visual queues.
As time moved on, I found a really great way of appreciating other designers’ work. I took out my notes and wrote down the idea or the skills that they use which was inspirational and can be used for my own work. In this article, I would love to share some techniques other designers use to manipulate images that can make your design work look professional immediately.
1. Use an image as the background
2. Blend image with background
3. Tightly place high-quality images together without leaving any margin.
4. Add a colour block beneath your image.
5. Adding patterns and shapes beneath/above your image
6. Add texts, patterns or irregular shapes beneath or above your image.
7. Clip Image to Text or Shape
8. Add a very narrow margin around images.
8. Apply a colourful overlay on the image
9. Apply a colourful overlay to a part of the image.
10. Clip your image to other shapes.
That’s It. I sum up some practical ways that you can do to manipulate your UI images which can make your project look professional immediately. You can do the same thing as me using moodboards and notes to write down all your thoughts about others’ projects and what can you learn from them. This way you are only without inspiration for a few hours if not minutes.
